Cavaliers Care 2009

Cavaliers Care is a worldwide volunteerism initiative based on one of the core principles of a Jeffersonian society - citizenship. Cavaliers Care is local and national in scope simultaneously. The concept is simple - harness the enthusiasm of Virginia alumni in local volunteer initiatives across the country into a coordinated effort nationwide.

Come help sort through donated nonperishable food items to dole out to the hungry in Montgomery County!

Manna Food Center strives to eliminate hunger in Montgomery County through food distribution, education, and advocacy. The not-for-profit organization fights hunger by collecting and distributing two million pounds of food each year to needy individuals and families. Manna provides a three to five-day supply of perishable and nonperishable food to each individual or family at one of seven distribution points in the County. Manna also distributes food to Montgomery County homeless shelters, soup kitchens, group homes, and low-income housing areas. Manna serves 20,000 families annually.

Help serve lunch to the hungry and sometimes homeless. Loaves and Fishes, a ministry of St. Stephen and the Incarnation Episcopal Church, has served lunch to hungry and often homeless people on Saturdays, Sundays and federal holidays since 1968. Since most Washington food programs serve only on weekdays, the program offers a crucial service to its guests, some of whom travel across the city to be able to eat on the weekend. The program serves the Mt. Pleasant community in Washington, D.C. and is supported by a number of churches and volunteer organizations from around the D.C. metro area.

In celebration of Earth Day, come volunteer to help protect our watershed! On Sunday, April 19, join UVA Alumni to help clean and Maintain Barcroft Park in Arlington. This is the final event of the Cavs Care service events in April. All supplies will be provided by Arlingtonians for a Clean Environment.

Barcroft Park is at 4200 South Four Mile Run Drive between George Mason Drive and Walter Reed Drive in south Arlington. We will meet at 1:00pm in front of the parking garage. The cleanup starts at the concrete ford behind the baseball field.

Directions by car:

From 395, exit at Shirlington; turn right onto Shirlington Road, then left onto Four Mile Run Drive. The Park is about one mile on the left.

Directions by bicycle:

Barcroft Park is on the W&OD and Four Mile Run bicycle path, between George Mason and Walter Reed Drives. If you are on the W&OD path, cross the street at DMV Drive traffic light and enter the park, going past the tennis courts. If you are on the Four Mile Run path coming from the west, you will enter Barcroft Park at George Mason. Continue along the path (past mile marker 4.5) until you see a turnoff to the left, with a wide bridge crossing the stream. From the east, you will enter Barcroft Park at Walter Reed Drive and the turnoff will be to the right.

This event will be rescheduled if it rains.
