Fourth of July Fireworks at Iwo Jima
Sunday, July 4, 2004
Iwo Jima 1629 Connecticut Ave. NW
Metro
stop: Rosslyn
Details below
Celebrate an Orange, red, white and Blue Independence Day with
fellow Wahoos at the Iwo Jima memorial. The grassy hillside by the
memorial is unknown to many tourists as a fireworks viewing site and
offers an even more spectacular vantage than the Mall with its full
view of DC's skyline. We'll stake out as much space as possible so
that everyone can be comfortable, social, and relaxed.
To help us gauge how much space we'll need, RSVP to
social@dchoos.org with "FIREWORKS" in the subject if you know you're
definitely coming. If you don't decide until the last minute, no
worries -- come anyway!
In the past, there have NOT been police checkpoints at Iwo Jima, but
there are many police and security personnel around the area. You
can probably bring bags and small coolers, but don't bring anything
you'd be bummed to have confiscated. If you have questions or
concerns, look for information published by the Park Police, Metro,
and local newspapers closer to the 4th.
Logistics:
- Meeting place - in front of the Iwo Jima Memorial, as close to
the fireworks as we can get. Look for orange and blue.
-
Time - The fireworks typically start around 9:00pm. We'll start
hanging out between 6:30 and 7:00.
-
* Metro directions - Take the Orange Line to Rosslyn. Exit onto
Fort Meyer Dr. and walk South (toward Wilson Blvd.) to the memorial
-
* What to bring - Something to sit on and water/Gatorade/etc. if
it's hot
