Join us for a hike through the Bull Run Mountains, complete with an enchanting creek,
remnants of a five-story stone mill, and a quarry trench. At the ridge top we will be rewarded with spectacular views of the valley!
The elevation gain is 1600 ft, so be prepared for some uphill and downhill walking.
The hike is approximately five miles.
Please consider bringing the following items:
- At least one bottle of water and comfortable walking shoes (Important!)
- Sunscreen, sunglasses, and/or hat
- Layers of clothing (We can always leave whatever we don't need in the car!)
**UPDATE - Hike Details**
- We are organizing a carpool, which will meet at the West Falls Church - VT/UVA metro station parking lot. We will be in the main parking lot for the metro - not in the overflow lot or in the parking garage. Go to the side of the parking lot that is closest to Haycock Rd. The event organizer has a blue mini-SUV (Toyota RAV4). The carpool will depart from the metro promptly at 9:15.
- Hikers can either join in the carpool or meet us at 10:00 AM at the trailhead. Note that parking is limited at the trailhead. Thus, unless there are already three or four people in your car, we encourage you to join in the carpool.
- We will be going to a TBD restaurant for lunch after the hike. Hikers can choose to join us at the restaurant and/or bring a lunch or snack to eat during the hike.
- The BRMC requires that all hikers fill out a Waiver of Liability. Hikers are encouraged to fill out the waiver beforehand and bring it to the hike. The event organizer will also bring extra copies for hikers to fill out at the trailhead, if needed.
- The BRMC suggests that hikers in groups leave a $5 donation. Please consider leaving a donation at the trailhead. Any donations would be greatly appreciated.
- Note that the BRMC does not permit any pets in the area. Please view the BRMC Trail Use Guidelines if any questions regarding what is permitted on the mountain.
- In case of inclement weather, the hike will take place on Sunday, May 22, 2005. Please check this webpage to see if the hike is postponed due to weather.
Please RSVP to Helen at hike@dchoos.org.
About The Bull Run Mountains
The Bull Run Mountains are the most easterly chain in the Piedmont, and they
protect the headwaters of two major watersheds: Occoquan and Goose Creek.
Seven perennial streams originate in the mountains. Approximately 45 miles
from Washington, D.C., the mountains are part of an important greenbelt
around the nation's capital and are vital because of their proximity
to ever-increasing population and development.
The mountains are composed of rock masses of metamorphic sandstones
called quartzite. They are remnants of an earlier erosion cycle that occurred
when the whole Piedmont was level with their summits. The Bull Run Mountains'
varied elevation, topography, soils, and hydrology contribute to a great
diversity of habitats and species. These ridges provide an isolated, rugged
highland terrain within the generally lowland piedmont.
