Don't you hate it when your nighttime photos come out dim, blurry, or completely black? Ever stroll among the National Monuments and Memorials in the magical hours after dark? Well, we're offering you the chance to learn some very handy photography tips from pro while experiencing part of DC in a way you may have never considered.
Frank Llosa, local Wahoo and photographer behind several famous photos of the Rotunda including "Bubbles" and "Zoom," will share some of his expertise to help you get the most out of your camera in low-light situations. Everyone, from point-and-shooters to semi-pros, is welcome.
After some instruction over coffee or desert at a nearby cafe, we'll practice our technique on the beautifully lit monuments and memorials at the West end of the National Mall, some of which are likely to stop you in your tracks with the power and beauty they take on at night. Participants can submit their photos for display on our web site, and the best one will win a prize!
Bring your camera so that you can learn with your own equipment. Both film and digital cameras are acceptable. If you can bring one or more tripods, please let us know when you register.
Important Information
Wear good walking shoes. In essence, this is a walking tour, so think twice about wearing your pointy heels or leather-soled loafers. If you have difficulty walking, you may be able to drive from the tutorial to a parking lot closer to the Mall, and then join us for just one or two memorials. Unfortunately, parking there is very limited unless you have a handicap permit.
If you have access to a tripod (friends, family members?) it can help a lot; especially if you have a feature-rich camera. Even a 6" table-top tripod can come in handy. To see if your point-and-shoot camera can make use of a tripod, look for a threaded screw hole on the bottom that's just a little smaller than a pencil eraser. Tripods screw into that hole. Mark, the event organizer, will bring as many tripods as he can dig up, but he won't have nearly enough for everybody.
Parking: On Monday evening, there was plenty of street parking along 19th St between D and G. There is also a garage on 19th just north of E that charges $6/hour and closes at 10:00.
Metro: The Orange/Blue line's Farragut West station is 4-5 blocks Northeast of Starbucks at 18th and I.
If you have any questions, please contact Mark at nightphoto@dchoos.org.
