"Italians are masters at transforming simple, everyday ingredients into dishes that are quick, healthy and satisfying." - Food Network
Due to the popularity of our first Italian cooking class, we will be having another session of transforming everyday ingredients into satisfying dishes. Chef Daniele Catalani will be teaching us how to prepare the different types of pasta from scratch including chocolate and ricotta ravioli for dessert! After the lesson, we will be feasting on the dishes we prepared, so come with an empty stomach.
Menu:
Ravioli with spinach and ricotta in a mascarpone cheese sauce
Classic Tuscan lasagna
Agnolotti filled with salmon and broccoli in a light fresh tomato sauce
Sicilian pasta salad
Homemade fettuccine tossed with asparagus and pecorino cheese
Dessert - Ravioli filled with ricotta and chocolate chips in a strawberry sauce
About the instructor:
Daniele Catalani was born "under the Tuscan sun" in 1977. He came to the United States approximately 6 years ago to work with Roberto Donna at Laboratorio Galileo, or more commonly known as Galileo Restaurant. He attended culinary institutes in Italy and Europe. Last summer, he left Galileo Restaurant to start his own business, D.C. Private Parties and Catering, which provides private cooking classes, home parties, catering and the like.
In February of 2005 he spearheaded a Fundraising event for the victims of Tsunami disaster in partnership with the American Red Cross and Casa Italiana . Daniele is fluent in both English and Italian, as well as Spanish and French.
About Casa Italiana:
While not comparable to New York's Little Italy or San Francisco's North Beach, this "littlest Italy" is Washington's own Mecca for Italians and Italian Americans proud of their ethnic heritage, and other Americans fascinated by the charm, beauty, and culture of Italy. Since its opening in 1981, Casa Italiana has become the fulcrum for Italians and Italian-Americans in the Greater Washington area and, indeed, for all those who treasure things Italian, by hosting characteristic events and cultural activities throughout the year.
Casa Italiana is conveniently located on Third Street, N.W., between F & G Streets in Northwest D.C., near the 395 D Street exit. It is one and a half blocks from the Judiciary Square Metro Station (Red Line). Street parking is available.
