Billy Goat Trail Hike (Sections A, B, and C)

Join your fellow Hoos as we hike the Billy Goat Trail! Many of us are familiar with Section A of the trail, which is one of the most popular hikes in the DC area with its rock scrambles and great scenery. However, fewer of us have completed the lesser-known Sections B and C, which have gentle slopes along the river with beautiful views.

We'll meet at the parking lot across from Old Angler's Inn at 9:00 AM. Hikers will have the option of hiking only Section A (4 miles round trip), Sections A & B (7 miles total round trip), or all three sections (10 miles total round trip). We'll first hike Section A. Those who desire can continue on to Section B, and then again to Section C.

• Length: 1.7 miles one way
• Difficulty: Strenuous
• Elevation Change: 200 feet
• Terrain: lots of rock scrambling along the river

• Length: 1.4 miles one way
• Difficulty: Moderate
• Elevation Change: 200 feet
• Terrain: minimum rock scrambling, gentle hike through forest

• Length: 1.6 miles one way
• Difficulty: Moderate
• Elevation Change: 150 feet
• Terrain: scenic river views, gentle hike, small waterfall

Note that Section A, while being the most popular, is also the most strenous. It consists of lots of rock scrambling, so be sure to bring sturdy hiking shoes! Dogs are prohibited on the hike.

Please consider bringing the following items:

• Important: At least one bottle of water (preferably two!) and sturdy hiking shoes
• Snack/lunch food
• Sunscreen, sunglasses, and/or hat

Directions to Meeting Location

From Washington, DC: Go out Canal Road, which becomes Clara Barton Parkway as you pass Chain Bridge. Pass under the Beltway and continue on the Parkway another 1.6 miles, to its termination at a T-intersection. Turn left onto Macarthur Boulevard. Go 1.1 mile and turn left into an unmarked parking lot, just across from Old Anglers Inn on the right. We will meet in the upper parking lot.

From Virginia: Come around the Beltway and cross the American Legion Bridge into Maryland. On the bridge get in the right-most lane and take the exit at the far end of the bridge, signed as "Exit 41 - Clara Barton Parkway - Carderock - Glen Echo." On the exit ramp, within 0.2 mile come to a Y-junction, and take the left fork, curving left onto Clara Barton Parkway. Go 1.6 miles, to its termination at a T-intersection. Turn left onto Macarthur Boulevard. Go 1.1 mile and turn left into an unmarked parking lot, just across from Old Anglers Inn on the right. We will meet in the upper parking lot.

From Maryland: Come around the Beltway heading west toward Virginia, and take the last exit before the American Legion Bridge - Exit 41. Curve right onto the Clara Barton Parkway. Go 1.6 miles, to its termination at a T-intersection. Turn left onto Macarthur Boulevard. Go 1.1 mile and turn left into an unmarked parking lot, just across from Old Anglers Inn on the right. We will meet in the upper parking lot.
